Scanned Medical Records helping to achieve meaningful use

Achieving Meaningful Use

When it comes to EMR / EHR projects, we are often asked "what is meaningful use?"

There are specific objectives in the meaningful use definitions that cover electronic copies of medical records. Specifically, Eligible Providers are required to provide patients with an electronic copy of their health information (including lab results, problem lists, medication lists, allergies) upon request. Having your patient charts scanned will enable your practice to efficiently meet this criteria.

The Final Health IT Policy Council definitions, published in August of 2009, groups the criteria into these categories:

  • Improve quality, safety, efficiency, and reduce health disparities
  • Engage patients and families
  • Improve care coordination
  • Improve poulation and public health
  • Ensure adequate privacy and security protections for personal health information
Obviously, these are very broad definitions. Click here to download a complete guide on Meaningful Use and How to Qualify for EHR Stimulus Funds under ARRA
